Anxiety shows up differently in every body
Anxiety is one of the most common experiences that brings people to therapy, and one of the most misunderstood. It isn’t just “overthinking.” It lives in the body, shapes relationships, and can quietly restructure your entire life if left unaddressed.
Here’s how it commonly shows up:
Physically
Racing heart, chest tightness, trouble sleeping, muscle tension, digestive issues, fatigue that doesn’t respond to rest, and frequent illness from chronic stress.
Cognitively
Racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, catastrophizing or “what if” spirals, trouble making decisions, perfectionism, and an inner critic that never seems to rest.
Behaviourally
Avoidance, people-pleasing, over-scheduling or under-functioning, difficulty saying no, withdrawing from relationships, and leaning on substances or screens to decompress.
If any of this resonates, you’re not broken. Your nervous system is just doing what nervous systems do under persistent stress, and it can learn a different way.
A word on burnout
Burnout is more than being tired. It’s a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that comes from prolonged stress, often from workplaces, caregiving roles, or the relentless pace of trying to do everything right.
Signs of burnout include emotional numbness or detachment, cynicism about work or relationships, a feeling that nothing you do is enough, and a deep exhaustion that vacation doesn’t touch.
Burnout is recoverable. But it takes more than rest. It takes understanding the patterns, values, and systems that led you there in the first place. That’s the work we do together.

What we use to help

- Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Building a present-moment anchor that anxiety can’t follow you to.
- Psychoeducation. Understanding what anxiety and burnout are, and why your body reacts the way it does, so the symptoms feel less frightening and more manageable.
- Somatic Approaches. Working with the body’s stress response directly, not just the mind.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS). Understanding the anxious part of you: where it came from, what it needs, and how to soothe it.
- Nervous System Regulation. Practical, evidence-based techniques for coming back to calm in real time.
- Values Clarification. For burnout especially, reconnecting with what actually matters to you as a foundation for lasting change.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Identifying and shifting the thought patterns that fuel anxiety.
You’re not broken. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do, and it can learn a different way.
