Supporting Someone

If you are worried about someone else

Ask them directly and plainly whether they are thinking about suicide. Asking does not put the idea in someone’s head. For most people it comes as a relief, because it means someone has noticed and is willing to hear the answer.

Listen without rushing to fix it. You do not need to have an answer, and you are not expected to be their therapist. Staying calm and staying present matters more than saying the right thing.

Do not leave someone alone if you believe they are in immediate danger. Call 9-1-1, or call 9-8-8 yourself for guidance on how to help them. You can call these lines on someone else’s behalf.

Offer to sit with them while they make the call, or to make it with them. The step from thinking about reaching out to actually doing it is the hardest part, and company makes it easier.
