Access for Everyone

Accessibility

What we have done to make this site and our office usable, what is still outstanding, and how to tell us about a barrier.

We want this website, and the office it describes, to work for as many people as possible. This page says what we have done, what we know is not finished yet, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

1. What we are aiming for

We build and maintain this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, WCAG 2.1, at Level AA. That is the benchmark Ontario’s Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation uses, and we hold ourselves to it whether or not the regulation requires it of a practice our size.

This is a commitment and an ongoing piece of work, not a claim that every page is already perfect. The next two sections say where we actually stand.

2. What the site does now

  • Pages use real headings in order, so a screen reader can move through them by structure rather than by guesswork.
  • Layouts reflow rather than break when you zoom in or use a narrow window, and the site works on a phone, a tablet and a desktop.
  • Text and background colours are chosen for contrast and legibility, not for effect alone.
  • Images that carry meaning have alternative text, and images that are decoration do not compete for a screen reader’s attention.
  • Links are written so that they still make sense when read on their own, out of the sentence around them.
  • A skip to content link at the start of every page, and clear keyboard focus outlines on buttons, links and form fields.
  • Movement on the page is turned off when your device is set to reduce motion.
  • Every field of the contact form has a visible label and autofill hints.
  • Our phone number and email address appear on every page, so there is always a route that does not depend on the website working for you.

3. What we are still working on

We would rather list these than let you find them.

  • Full testing of every page from end to end with a screen reader.
  • Our online booking system and our map are run by other companies, and their accessibility is theirs to maintain. If either one blocks you, call us and we will book the appointment or give you directions ourselves.

4. Getting into the building

Our office at 108 Kathleen Avenue is not wheelchair accessible. There are stairs up to the entryway and there is no ramp or lift. We would rather you read that here than find it out at the door.

There is parking close to the building. If you want to know anything else before a first visit (how many steps there are, whether there is a handrail, how wide the doorway is, where the washroom is, or how a room is laid out), call 519-336-9612 and we will describe it to you plainly instead of reassuring you.

If the stairs are a barrier for you, that does not mean we cannot work together. We offer sessions by secure video and by telephone, and our practitioners see clients that way as a matter of course, not as a lesser option. Say so when you first make contact and we will set it up.

We do not own the building, so we cannot promise you a date when this will change. What we can promise is that we will not describe the office as something it is not, and that the video and telephone option is a real one rather than a formality.

5. Service animals, support people and accommodations

A service animal is welcome anywhere in our space that you are welcome. If you are accompanied by a support person, they are welcome too, and we will talk with you about what they are and are not part of.

Tell us what you need and we will try to arrange it: a longer appointment, a quieter time of day, written material in large print, a session by phone or video rather than in person, a different room, or extra time to complete paperwork. Ask at intake, or at any point afterwards. You do not need to explain more than you want to.

6. Information in another format

If anything on this site or on any of our forms would be easier for you in another format, ask and we will provide it: large print, plain text, a file your screen reader can read, or someone going through it with you over the phone. There is no charge for this, and we will agree on the format with you rather than guess.

7. Telling us about a barrier

If something on this site or in our office gets in your way, we want to know. Tell us what you were trying to do and what happened, and tell us how you would like us to reply.

You can also tell us in person, or write to us at 108 Kathleen Avenue, Sarnia, Ontario N7T 1C8. Feedback can be given in whatever format works for you, including by phone if writing is the barrier.

We aim to acknowledge within two business days and to tell you what we intend to do about it. If we cannot fix something quickly, we will say so plainly and tell you what we can offer in the meantime. If you are not satisfied with our response, ask for it to go to the practice owner and we will make sure it does.
